51 Basketball 篮球

Hello everybody, 大家好, thanks for joining us today on Growing up with Chinese 成长汉语.

Now the past couple of shows we got to know 小明’s uncle 王叔叔 quite well. And today we are going to be getting back to a more normal routine for Mike and 小明, they’re playing basketball. Now, we know from earlier on our series that 小明 is a Kobe fan. And perhaps today he’ll be channeling some of Kobe’s magic. So, let’s check in and find out.

OK, well it looks like not only is 小明 a Kobe fan but Mike is as well. There was quite a bit of basketball specific vocabulary in today’s clip but don’t worry, we’ll go over it right now.

你投得太准了, 你完全可以去湖人队打比赛了. You shoot so accurately you can totally go to the Lakers and compete. Now 投 is the verb to shoot as in shoot a basketball. And 准 means accurate. 完全 means completely or totally. And 湖人队 is how you say the Lakers in Chinese. 小明 must really think Mike is good.

那我祝你梦想成真. Then I hope your dreams will come true. 梦想 means dreams. 成 is the verb to turn or become. And 真 means real or true. 梦想成真 may your dreams come true.

小明:麦克,你投得太准了。崇拜崇拜。我看,你完全可以去湖人队打比赛了
麦克:哈哈,我最喜欢湖人队的科比了。能和科比一起打球是我最大的梦想。
小明:哈哈,哥们儿,那我祝你梦想成真
麦克:梦想成真?
小明:你忘啦? 就是我昨天刚教你的成语啊!
麦克:哦,对对对。我想起来了。梦想成真!

其实你今天也没有什么技术问题, 就是太心急了. Actually you’re not having any technical problems today, it’s just that you’re in too much of a hurry. 技术 means technical or technology. And 问题 we know means problem. So 技术问题 is technical problem or technical problems. 心急 is a fabulous word meaning impatient, anxious or short tempered. 小明 does need to calm down a bit. Haha I agree.

我投篮时, 总怕被别人“盖帽.” When I take a shot, I’m always worried I’ll get blocked. 篮 means basket so, 投篮 is to shoot a basket or shoot at the basket. 总怕 is always afraid or always worried. And 盖帽 is a basketball term specifically referring to having your shot blocked. 盖帽. It literally means to cover with a hat. A fun way to describe blocking your shot, if you ask me*1.

小明:麦克,你今天状态挺好的。三分球是你的秘密武器呀。可是,我今天打得一点儿也不好。
麦克:小明其实你今天也没有什么技术问题。就是太心急了
小明:你说得太对了。我投篮时,总怕被别人“盖帽”
麦克:所以嘛。你这么心急,能进球才怪。
同学甲:小明、麦克,来。你们喝点儿水。
麦克、小明:谢谢。

小明:咱们今天犯规太多,打得不太好。

这就叫没有团队精神. This is called having no team spirit. 团队 means team and 精神 is energy or spirit. 团队精神 teams spirit.

如果能注意团队配合, 一定能赢. If we can be aware of cooperating as a team, we can definitely win. 注意 is to pay attention to or watch out for. 配合 means cooperation. 团队配合 team cooperation.

不仅能赢球, 还能促进同学友谊. Not only can we win, or we can also promote friendship between our classmates. 促进 is quite a specific word it means promote, advance or accelerate. And 友谊 is how you say friendship in Chinese. So, 促进同学友谊 is promote friendship between classmates. Mike is quite a diplomat.

麦克:对,这就叫没有团队精神
小明:呦,麦克,你的中文说得越来越好啦。还知道团队精神呢!
麦克:哪里,哪里。您过奖了。
同学乙:我们的技术都不错。如果能注意团队配合,一定能赢
麦克:可不是嘛! 不仅能赢球,还能促进同学友谊呢。
小明:麦克,行啊,你越来越能说啦!
麦克:我这叫有口才。
同学们:哈哈 哈哈!

OK so first we’ll take a look at today’s vocabulary.

  • 传球 pass the ball. chuán qiú
  • 投篮 shoot as in shoot a basket. tóu lán
  • 梦想成真 may your dreams come true. mèng xiǎng chéng zhēn
  • 武器 weapon. wǔ qì

Our radical for the day is pretty cool as it looks kind of like what it means. 皿. So, let’s look at it and then I’ll tell you what it means. So this is our character and radical 皿, it means household utensils. OK, I love this radical because the possibilities with it are endless.

Now, we see it in the 盖 of 盖帽, which means to block. So 盖 looks like this... 盖. Now 盖 on its own means cover like cover a pot or cover something up. So it kind of make sense that the character for cover 盖 would have the household utensil radical.

Now, here some more characters with 皿 as their radical. 盒 box. 盘 plate or tray. 盛 flourishing, thriving, prosperous.

Spotlight

We’ve talked about schooling and the education system in China before. But we haven’t had the chance yet to take a closer look at middle school and high school. Every country has its own way to spread up middle school and high school years.

In the States, seventh and eighth grade count as middle school. And then high school is grades nine through twelve. In China, middle school or 初中 is seventh through ninth grades or 初一, 初二, 初三. And high school 高中 is tenth through twelfth grades or 高一, 高二, 高三.

Now for me what’s interesting about 初中 and 高中 or middle school and high school in China is the way classes are organized. In China, the notion of a school class or 班 is quite different.

The class always has class together. So, high school might have seven tenth grade classes that are usually called class one, class two, class three, etc. If I’m in class one, I will have every single subject with my classmates in class one. So you might move classrooms depending on what class you’re having like chemistry or physics. But the student body of your class never changes. It doesn’t change, that is, until the second semester of your eleventh year.

When that semester rose around students have to pick either a science or humanities focus kind of like declaring your major or focus in university. And once everyone’s focus has been declared, then the class or 班 get reshuffled. But once that reshuffling has happened, and everyone has a class there in, things get back to normal. All your classes are with the some group of people: your 班同学 your class classmates.

Primer

It’s language point time. 下面我们一起来看一下今天的语言点.

一点 or 一点儿. This is used before 不 or 没. 一点儿不, 一点儿没. And that expresses a total negation of something much like completely or totally when used in a negative sentence in English. For example, you can add an adverb like 也 or 都 in between 一点 and the negating adverb 不 or 没. 一点都不, 一点也没. 今天我打得一点儿也不好. I’m not playing well today at all.

  • 这件事你一点儿都不知道吗?/我真的一点儿都不知道。
  • 我觉得他唱歌真好听。/一点儿也不好听。

才怪. 才怪 is used mostly in spoken Chinese, it comes at the end of a sentence to imply negation. 怪 on its own means strange or weird or funny. 你这么心急, 能进球才怪. You’re rushing so much, if you were hitting your shots, it would be weird. OK let’s look at some more examples of 才怪. So you can all get a better feeling for it.

  • 北京队又输了。/踢得这么差,不输才怪
  • 兰兰,我今天又迟到了。/你天天玩儿到半夜,不迟到才怪

We’ve got a pattern to look at. 不仅 something 还. This is quite similar to the English pattern of “not only ... also.” Now this pattern appears in written Chinese more than in spoken Chinese although you will hear it from time to time being spoken, just like we did in today’s dialogue. 不仅能赢球, 还能促进同学友谊. Not only can we win, we can also promote friendship between classmates.

  • 不仅喜欢吃西餐,喜欢做西餐。/我只喜欢吃西餐。
  • 你会游泳吗?/当然了,我不仅会游泳,会跳水呢。

Already, that brings us to the end of today’s show. I hope you all enjoyed learning some Chinese basketball vocabulary, now if any of you ever get the chance to play a pickup game*2 while you’re here, communication won’t be an issue.
