Now our episode today is continuation of last time’s show. Now for those of you who might have missed it, 兰兰’s bicycle broke down on the way to school. But luckily 小明 was there to lend his bicycle to her, so she wouldn’t be late.
So did her bike get fixed in the end? What’s going on. Well, let’s check in with everyone and find out just how the bike saga is going to end up.
老师：同学们再见。
同学：起立。老师再见。兰兰：小明，你的自行车钥匙，谢谢你啊。
小明：怎么还这么客气啊。没事儿。
兰兰：对了，我的自行车怎么样了？ 修好了吗？
小明：还没有，我把你的自行车存到路边的存车处了。这样吧，兰兰，趁着天还没黑，我带你一起去修车吧？
兰兰：那太好了，我们走吧。小明：叔叔，我的车坏了。您帮着修一下？
叔叔：好的。你看，这里的零件坏了。得换一个。
兰兰：那要多少钱啊？
叔叔：30块钱。
小明：叔叔，什么时候能修好？
叔叔：起码也得半个多小时。
兰兰：要修这么久啊？
叔叔：你们看，我这儿还修着别人的车呢。他们也着急。要不这么着，你们把车先放在这儿，过一会儿再来取。行吗？
兰兰：嗯，我看我们还是在这儿等吧。
小明：叔叔，要不然，我帮您打下手得了？ 这样会快一点儿。
叔叔：你还能帮我打下手？
小明：您还不信啊！ 一般来说，自行车的小毛病我都能修。
叔叔：我看还是不用了。我怕你们这些小孩儿啊，给我帮倒忙。
小明：帮倒忙？ 您也太小看我啦！
兰兰：小明，算啦。我们还是坐在这儿等吧。
All right well it looks like the bicycle will be just fine thank goodness. Let’s now take a look at some of the main phrases we just heard.
我把你的自行车存到路边的存车处了. I parked your bike in bicycle parking by the side of the road. Now 存 is the verb to store. So 存车处 is how you say bicycle parking lot.
Now there are many different kinds of 存车处 in China. Some are just bike racks by the side of the road and others are actual open air sheds*1 where you pay to park your bike. And usually there’s a grandpa or grandma there to make sure that all the bikes stay safe. So in essence a 存车处 is just like a parking lot or parking garage for cars but instead, it’s for bicycles.
起码也得半个多小时. It will take at least over half an hour. 起码 means at least or a minimum. 半个小时 is half an hour. So 半个多小时 is more than half an hour.
同学：起立。老师再见。
兰兰：小明，你的自行车钥匙，谢谢你啊。
小明：怎么还这么客气啊。没事儿。
兰兰：对了，我的自行车怎么样了？ 修好了吗？
小明：还没有，我把你的自行车存到路边的存车处了。这样吧，兰兰，趁着天还没黑，我带你一起去修车吧？
兰兰：那太好了，我们走吧。小明：叔叔，我的车坏了。您帮着修一下？
叔叔：好的。你看，这里的零件坏了。得换一个。
兰兰：那要多少钱啊？
叔叔：30块钱。
小明：叔叔，什么时候能修好？
叔叔：起码也得半个多小时。
兰兰：要修这么久啊？
叔叔, 要不然, 我帮您打下手得了? Uncle, what if I act as your assistant? 打下手 is a colloquial way of saying act as a helper or to be someone’s assistant.
自行车的小毛病我都能修. I can fix just about every little problem on a bicycle. Now 毛病 in this context means problem or issue. So 小毛病 is a small problem or a slight problem. 小明 is pretty handy isn’t he.
叔叔：你们看，我这儿还修着别人的车呢。他们也着急。要不这么着，你们把车先放在这儿，过一会儿再来取。行吗？
兰兰：嗯，我看我们还是在这儿等吧。
小明：叔叔，要不然，我帮您打下手得了？ 这样会快一点儿。
叔叔：你还能帮我打下手？
小明：您还不信啊！ 一般来说，自行车的小毛病我都能修。
叔叔：我看还是不用了。我怕你们这些小孩儿啊，给我帮倒忙。
帮倒忙? 您也太小看我啦! Do more harm than good? You are really underestimating me. To 小看 people is to be little them or underestimate them or look down on them. So it seems like the man fixing bicycles isn’t too used having someone assist in especially someone 小明’s age.
叔叔：30块钱。
小明：叔叔，什么时候能修好？
叔叔：起码也得半个多小时。
兰兰：要修这么久啊？
叔叔：你们看，我这儿还修着别人的车呢。他们也着急。要不这么着，你们把车先放在这儿，过一会儿再来取。行吗？
兰兰：嗯，我看我们还是在这儿等吧。
小明：叔叔，要不然，我帮您打下手得了？ 这样会快一点儿。
叔叔：你还能帮我打下手？
小明：您还不信啊！ 一般来说，自行车的小毛病我都能修。
叔叔：我看还是不用了。我怕你们这些小孩儿啊，给我帮倒忙。
小明：帮倒忙？ 您也太小看我啦！
兰兰：小明，算啦。我们还是坐在这儿等吧。

OK everyone, it’s time now to take a look at our vocabulary and today’s pinyin highlight.
And first off, let’s look at our specific vocabulary words.
- 客气 polite, courteous*2. kè qì
- 趁 take advantage of, avail oneself of. chèn
- 修 fix. xiū
- 坏 break, broken. huài
- 换 change, substitute. huàn
- 一般 ordinary, common. yì bān
All right for today’s pinyin highlight I want to take a look at two characters: 修 to fix and 坏, which means break or broken.
So let’s first take a look at 修. 修 is spelled x-i-u xiu. Now, think xi and ou and you can pretty much get xiu xiu. Now it’s first tone and our tone marker goes above the u, xiū our final vowel.
OK, now let’s get 坏. 坏 坏 h-u-a-i huai. Now, huai is fourth tone and because we have an a, our huai takes its tone marker above the a and not the i. So it’s huài. xiū and huài.
It’s time to take a look at our language points of the day and to begin with let’s discuss 趁着.
趁着 means to take advantage of like 趁着现在有时间, 都出去走走. Let’s take advantage of having time now and go out for more walks. Today 小明 said 兰兰, 趁着天还没黑, 我带你一起去修车吧. 兰兰, let’s take advantage of the fact that it’s not dark out yet and go get your bike fixed. Let’s look at some more examples.
- Mike，趁着天还没黑，我们赶紧去打会儿球吧。／好的。
- 趁着今天天气好，我们出去划船吧。／好啊。
帮倒忙. 帮倒忙 is a colloquial way to say do more harm than good or be a hinderance rather than a help. Now this is an interesting word because 帮忙 means to help, right? And 倒 means upside down or inverted. So 帮倒忙 is like saying upside down help or inverted help. It’s not really help, is it. OK, so the bicycle fix-it man said to 小明 in response to 小明’s offer to help, 我怕你们这些小孩儿, 给我帮倒忙. I fear the kids like you would be more in the way*3 than helpful.
- 妈，我来帮您吧。／算了吧，你别帮倒忙了。
- 小明，我桌上的报纸怎么不见了？／报纸？ 我扔了。／你净帮倒忙，唉，上面有我的文章。
一般来说. This means typically or usually. 一般来说 usually appears at the beginning of a sentence just like typically and usually in English. So today 小明 said, 一般来说, 自行车的小毛病我都能修. Usually, I can fix just about any little problem on a bicycle. All right, let’s look at some more ways to use 一般来说.
- 一般来说，你一周用多长时间学汉语？／大概十来个小时。
- 小明的英语怎么学都学不好。／阿姨，一般来说，男生都不爱学英语。
