Hi everyone 大家好, 欢迎收看今天的成长汉语. Thanks for joining us for today’s episode of Growing up with Chinese.
Now for those of you who missed our last show, Mike and 小明 have finally made it to*1 上海. And are out and about on the town with 小明’s cousin 茜茜. Now, we will be continuing today’s clip from last time, so let’s check back in with our gang of explores and see how their exploring is going.
堂妹：这里就是外滩了，麦克。你觉得和看到的明信片一样吗？
Mike：好看，好看，我看呀比明信片还美呢。
兰兰：那当然！ 你们看，这条街就是中国原来的“华尔街”，现在也有很多的银行和证券交易所呢。
Mike：怪不得大家第一次来上海都要先到外滩看看，这里真是美不可言啊。
小明：哎，麦克，对面那个高高的塔就是著名的东方明珠电视塔。堂妹：对。那边就是浦东。浦东不仅有东方明珠电视塔，还有金茂大厦啊、环球金融中心啊、上海科技馆啊……好多漂亮的建筑呢。
Mike：浦东的建筑可真现代啊！
堂妹：那是现在。上海人有一句老话，叫：“宁要浦西一张床，不要浦东一间房。”
Mike：为什么啊？ 浦东这么漂亮，而且，你们看，黄浦江上有很多渡轮，来来往往也很容易，为什么上海人不愿意住在浦东呢？
小明：麦克，我来告诉你吧。原来的浦东可没有这么多的高楼大厦，也没有这么繁华的商业街。不论是生活还是工作，都很不方便。
Mike：噢，原来如此啊。等等我，我一定要把浦东的美景拍下来。晚上发给我爸爸妈妈看。
堂妹：麦克，你先别着急拍照。我先带你们去别的地方看看。晚上再来外滩。你知道吗，外滩的夜景真是要多漂亮，有多漂亮。
Mike：现在的外滩就已经很漂亮了。I LOVE SHANG HAI。
小明：麦克，你这么激动干什么啊！ 吓我一跳！
Mike：对不起啊，我只是表达一下我的心情而已。
茜茜：哈哈。
Mike：小明、茜茜，咱们坐渡轮去浦东看看吧？ 怎么样？ 快走快走，在哪儿买票啊？ 我恨不得现在就上东方明珠电视塔看看。
堂妹：麦克，别着急。浦西还有好多好玩儿的地方呢。
小明：是啊，麦克，你就听这个厉害的小导游吧。她可是个“上海通”呢。
Mike：那好吧。
So now we’ve had glimpses of 浦东, which literally means the east side of the river. And we are standing in 浦西, which means west side of the river. Now 上海 is split into east and west sides by the 黄浦 river. Anyway, enough of that, let’s look at some of what was said in today’s dialogue.
麦克, 对面那个高高的塔就是著名的东方明珠电视塔. Mike, the tall building across from us is the famous Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Now 塔 means pagoda but it also means tower. And 著名 is famous or well known. 东方明珠电视塔 is the Oriental Pearl TV Tower.
堂妹：这里就是外滩了，麦克。你觉得和看到的明信片一样吗？
Mike：好看，好看，我看呀比明信片还美呢。
兰兰：那当然！ 你们看，这条街就是中国原来的“华尔街”，现在也有很多的银行和证券交易所呢。

Mike：为什么啊？ 浦东这么漂亮，而且，你们看，黄浦江上有很多渡轮，来来往往也很容易，为什么上海人不愿意住在浦东呢？
浦东这么漂亮, 而且, 你们看, 黄浦江上有很多渡轮, 来来往往也很容易, 为什么上海人不愿意住在浦东? 浦东 is so beautiful and look, there are a lot of ferries and 黄浦 river going back and forth is really easy. Why do people from 上海 not want to live in 浦东? Now 江 means river, so 黄浦江 is how you say Huangpu river. 渡轮 is ferry or ferry boat and 来往 is the verb to come and go. So, 来来往往 is like saying comings and goings.
Mike：浦东的建筑可真现代啊！
堂妹：那是现在。上海人有一句老话，叫：“宁要浦西一张床，不要浦东一间房。”
Mike：为什么啊？ 浦东这么漂亮，而且，你们看，黄浦江上有很多渡轮，来来往往也很容易，为什么上海人不愿意住在浦东呢？
小明：麦克，我来告诉你吧。原来的浦东可没有这么多的高楼大厦，也没有这么繁华的商业街。不论是生活还是工作，都很不方便。
Mike：噢，原来如此啊。等等我，我一定要把浦东的美景拍下来。晚上发给我爸爸妈妈看。

Mike：现在的外滩就已经很漂亮了。I LOVE SHANG HAI。

Mike：对不起啊，我只是表达一下我的心情而已。
麦克, 你就听这个厉害的小导游吧, 她可是个“上海通”呢. Mike, why don’t you just listen to this fierce young tour guide? She is a 上海 expert. 导游 is tour guide. So 小导游 is little tour guide or young tour guide. 上海通 means 上海 expert and just you all know, you can say 中国通, 上海通, 美国通, etc, to refer to experts of any place like China or America.
堂妹：麦克，你先别着急拍照。我先带你们去别的地方看看。晚上再来外滩。你知道吗，外滩的夜景真是要多漂亮，有多漂亮。
Mike：现在的外滩就已经很漂亮了。I LOVE SHANG HAI。
小明：麦克，你这么激动干什么啊！ 吓我一跳！
Mike：对不起啊，我只是表达一下我的心情而已。
茜茜：哈哈。
Mike：小明、茜茜，咱们坐渡轮去浦东看看吧？ 怎么样？ 快走快走，在哪儿买票啊？ 我恨不得现在就上东方明珠电视塔看看。
堂妹：麦克，别着急。浦西还有好多好玩儿的地方呢。
小明：是啊，麦克，你就听这个厉害的小导游吧。她可是个“上海通”呢。
Mike：那好吧。
All right everyone it’s time now to look at today’s vocabulary and we’re playing another word game.
All right, but first off let’s look at our specific vocabulary words.
- 塔 in today’s context, ta means tower. (tǎ)
- 著名 famous, noted, well-known, celebrated. zhù míng
- 现代 modern. xiàn dài
- 繁华 flourishing, thriving, prosperous, bustling. fán huá
- 商业 commerce, trade, business. shāng yè
- 吓 frighten, scare. xià
- 表达 express, as in express oneself. biǎo dá
It’s language point time everybody we’ve got three patterns to cover today so let’s get started.
不论...都. Now 不论 means no matter who, what, how and so on. And its use in the meaning is very similar to another pattern we covered not too long ago 不管...都. So 小明 said today 原来的浦东可没有这么多高楼大厦, 也没有这么繁华的商业, 不论是生活还是工作, 都很不方便. The 浦东 of the past didn’t have so many tall buildings or such a thriving commerce and trade. No matter if you lived here or worked here, it was all very inconvenient. Now you could also say 不论做什么工作, 他都很认真. No matter what job he does, he’s always very earnest. And just you all know, 无论 can be exchanged for 不论. 无论, 不论. All right, let’s take a look at some more examples.
- 兰兰，你喜欢吃什么口味的？／不论什么味道的我都喜欢。
- 妈，我要好好学习。不论有什么困难，我都能克服。／但愿如此。
要多...有多. Now this is a pattern that expresses a high degree of something. And the pattern works like this: 要多A, 有多A. OK, so 小明’s cousin 茜茜 said today 你知道吗, 外滩的夜景真是要多漂亮, 有多漂亮. You know the Bund at night is truly stunning. Now you could also say 要多好吃, 有多好吃, which carries the meaning 非常好吃 or delicious. Let’s look at some more examples of this pattern.
- 生煎包好吃吗？／怎么说呢？ 要多好吃有多好吃。
- 小明，上海的夏天热吗？／又热又潮，要多难受有多难受。
And finally we’ve got something 而已. 而已 is a function word and is usually used at the end of a declarative sentence*2. It’s like saying noting more, nothing but or only in other words. 而已 minimizes the effective of the statement. Now oftentimes 不过, 仅仅, 只 and 非 appear before it. So Mike said today 对不起, 我只是表达一下我的心情而已. Sorry I was just expressing my feelings nothing more. Now you could also say 我不过是想请你吃饭而已. I just wanted to ask you out for dinner, that’s all. OK, let’s look at some more examples of 而已.
- 听说你们今天又去电子市场了？／我们只是去随便逛逛而已，什么也没买。
- Mike怎么不理我？ 生气了？／噢，他只是没听到而已。
All right everyone last time I left you out with a word game to solve and today we’re going to be looking at the answer. So let’s take a look at our characters one more time.
All right, there were a lot, weren’t there. Oh we have 只要 问题 没有 的 有 不难 耐心 解决. Hmm so lot isn’t it. OK with the English for this was “as long as you have patience, there aren’t any problems you can’t solve.” Something along those lines. So let’s check out the proper order shall we?
只要 有 耐心 没有 不能 解决 的 问题. There we are so it’s 只要有耐心, 没有不能解决的问题. How did you do?
