大家好. Hi everybody, 欢迎收看今天的成长汉语. Thanks for joining us for today’s episode of Growing up with Chinese.
Now Mike, 兰兰 and 小明 are still out in suburbs of 北京 today having a barbecue picnic, sounds like fun doesn’t it? It’s kind of bittersweet*1 for them though as Mike’s time in China is drawing to a close. But, the time to leave hasn’t come just yet. So let’s check in with them and see what kind of picnic they are having.
Picnics, barbecues or cook-outs*2 are always fun, don’t you think? Now our trio certainly looked like they were having fun feasting on*3 all the goodies they brought along on their trip. Now our dialogue was pretty straightforward but let’s take a few minutes to go over some of what was said.
小明 exhibited some chivalrous behavior today when he offered to carry 兰兰’s bag. 兰兰 thought so too, so she said 你现在还挺乐于助人的. You seem pretty happy to help people now. 乐于 is the key to the sentence, it means be happy to or take delight in. 助 is the 助 of 帮助 or to help. So if you 助人, you 帮助别人 or help other people.
Now who would have thought 小明 was such the fisherman? Mike was pretty surprised and said 你还真有两下子. You’re pretty good at that. 两下子 is a set saying that means some tricks of the trait, flair*4 or ability. If you say 真有两下子, it means be really good or be really skillful at something.
Now there’re all kinds of ways in any language to say that you’ve eaten too much. In the States, we might say I’m stuffed, I’m so full, I’m going to explode and on and on. Today 小明 used a very typical expression to convey that he had eaten too much. He said 哎哟, 撑死我啦. 撑 is our verb and in the context of eating, it means full to the point of bursting. Now remember something 死我了 serves to maximize the verb that comes before it. It expresses an extreme degree. In this case, it’s eating too much. 撑死我了.
And finally, let’s look at what 兰兰 said regarding Mike having to go back home to America soon. She said 我真舍不得你走. I really don’t want you to leave. Now our key in this sentence is 舍不得. Too loath*5 to part with*6 or give up. You can 舍不得 a person or thing.
All right, now let’s take some time to go over our vocabulary of the day.
- 烧烤 barbecue. shāo kǎo
- 撑 in today’s context, 撑 means heavy. chén
- 钓 to fish with a hook and line. diào
- 鸡翅 chicken wing. jī chì
OK it’s time to go over our language points of the day and they aren’t too difficult, so let’s start with 毕竟.
毕竟 is an adverb and is equivalent to the English after all, all in all, or when all is said in done*7. 毕竟 can come either before or after the subject of a sentence. So today, after 兰兰 said that 小明 should be full from eating all those cherries, 小明 said 樱桃毕竟不是饭. 我们男孩儿可不像你一样, 随便吃点东西就能饱. After all, cherries aren’t a meal. Us boys can’t just eat a little bit of something and be full like you. Now another example of 毕竟 could be 他毕竟是个孩子, 你别老批评他. This could also be said as 毕竟他是个孩子, 你别老批评他. When all is said in done, he’s still a child. You shouldn’t be scolding him all the time.
OK next up let’s look at 动不动. Now this is a great expression implying ease and behaving or reacting a certain way. And most of the time it’s used when a behavior or reaction isn’t what you want or it isn’t positive. So with that in mind*8 let’s look at how 小明 used this expression today. He said 你别动不动就拿我开玩笑啊. You shouldn’t make fun of me all the time. Now another example of 动不动 could be 她的身体不好, 动不动就生病. Her health isn’t good, so she gets sick very easily.
And finally, we have a pattern: 大 something 大 something else. Now, typically this pattern is coupled with a monosyllabic noun or verb to create a set expression. Now two examples of this could be 大哭大闹 or 大喊大叫. 大哭大闹 means to cry and be noisy. And 大喊大叫 is to yell and call out in a very loud voice. The 大...大 pattern here suggests a high degree.
