新冠病毒、肺炎、隔离...英语怎么说？

| Adam: | Hey guys this is Adam. |
| Jenny: | 那今天是我们春节过后的第一期节目。那我们全国人民都在全力的抗击新型冠状病毒。那我们的节目呢，要跟大家来聊一聊这个非常重要的话题。 |
| Adam: | That’s right, a super important topic that really everybody is to who is not talking about this. |
| Jenny: | 对, 而且 we can all do our part to fight this virus. |
| Adam: | Yeah, well we can fight the virus, and we can also fight the misinformation, about the virus we can do that here by well, just sharing some ways that you can use English to talk about this virus. |
| Jenny: | 好。那首先呢，还希望大家都平平安安。然后就像钟南山院士*1说得最好的取阻击这个病毒传播的方法还是大家尽量待在家里啊。减少人群的流动和活动，那也希望我们的节目呢，这段时间能够陪伴你。 |
| Jenny: | 好，现在说一下这个新型冠状病毒他的英语叫做？ |
| Adam: | Coronavirus. |

| Jenny: | Oh, coronavirus. |
| Adam: | Coronavirus. |
| Jenny: | Virus这个词你可能知道就是病毒 it can make people sick or it can make your computer or your phone sick. |
| Adam: | That’s right. But “corona” this really means the shape. |
| Jenny: | 哦对，corona或者另外有一个相关的英语词的crown皇冠，对吧。就是这个冠状的啊，coronavirus。 |
| Jenny: | 那，新型冠状病毒，这个我们把它叫做？ |
| Adam: | Novel*2 coronavirus. |
| Jenny: | 哦novel。Novel有一个意思是小说。但它作为形容词还有一个意思就是new。 |
| Adam: | Right, right. |
| Jenny: | 嗯，然后这一次世界卫生组织呢，就把这个病毒称作为novel coronavirus. |
| Adam: | Uh-huh. But of course that’s very long, so the WHO has given it a a short form or an abbreviation, which is 2019-nCoV*3. |
| Jenny: | 对有一个代码啊，n就是novel然后CoV coronavirus。 |
| Jenny: | 向我身在加拿大嘛，那我们当地的华人一个是自己非常自觉，如果近期有一些回国特别去过湖北去过武汉的，大家在家里自我隔离。另外一点还是要教育周围的外国人说don’t call it the Wuhan virus. |
| Jenny: | 好我们接下来说一下，这次这个冠状病毒它其实会引起是一个肺部感染是肺炎。肺炎的英语是？ |
| Adam: | Pneumonia. |
| Jenny: | Pneumonia. Pneumonia这个拼法用一点虽然读音是N开头的，但它的拼写P开头。 |
| Adam: | Right I don’t think a lot of native speakers will be able to spell those words, it starts with the P: p-n-e-u. |
| Jenny: | Oh, pneumonia. |
| Adam: | Yeah the monia part is pretty easy m-o-n-i-a. But, yeah that’s a tough one to spell. |
| Jenny: | 好。那，这个新型冠状病毒呢，它是一个传染病啊。传染病英语我们可以叫它为？ |
| Adam: | A contagious virus or a contagious disease. |
| Jenny: | OK. So contagious的意思就是会传给很多人，对不对。 |
| Adam: | Right, right. |
| Jenny: | 那另外这个contagious就让我想到了它的反义词，就是我们要控制这个病毒的传递。然后这个反义词也是con-什么的。 |
| Jenny: | To contain*4 the virus. |
| Adam: | it will contain, control, |
| Jenny: | 对，是的。好, So we need to contain the virus from spreading, 对吧. To spread就是比较口语的一个说病毒传播的一个说法。 |
| Adam: | Sure, sure but of course as you were saying before, viruses can spread diseases can spread, but so two can misinformation. |
| Jenny: | Oh misinformation. Information大家都知道它的意思。那前面加一个m-i-s的前缀就变成了， |
| Adam: | The opposite: misinformation. |
| Jenny: | 这很可能这是不实的一些信息，对吗。 |
| Adam: | It’s not necessarily wrong, it’s just probably not right. |
| Jenny: | 是是是。所以这个时候真的非常重要的是you need to stay informed through trusted sources，对啊。 |
| Jenny: | 好。那，将回那个病毒的传播啊，因为我现在看很多媒体，英文媒体的报道。他说 you know China is working hard to contain this virus outbreak. 所以outbreak也是讲到这个virus disease的受常用到的。 |
| Adam: | Yes, outbreak you can kinda see from this word breaking out. So it’s not just spreading slowly; it’s going very quickly. |
| Jenny: | 啊它就有一个爆发点意思载啊。 |
| Jenny: | 好。被病毒感染英语要怎么说呢？ |
| Adam: | Could probably use the word “infected,” to be infected by something? |
| Jenny: | 嗯，是。然后我们每天大家很关注的比如今天有多少例确诊*5，或者多少例疑似。这种“例”像病例，英文我们用可以用case这个词，对吗。 |
| Adam: | Yes, exactly. So doctors or the media will always talk about cases, uh confirmed cases? |
| Jenny: | 哦确诊的病例。还有一些是疑似病例。 |
| Adam: | Presumed. |
| Jenny: | 啊 or presumptive case, 是吧. |
| Jenny: | 好。那接受我们教说说to prevent this virus outbreak。先大家能做的就是待在家里、减少出门啊。那以及*6也有一些向自我隔离。那说到这个隔离啊待在家，在英文里最常用的有两个差两个说法。 |
| Adam: | Um, right. The one very very official very formal sounding word is quarantine*7. |
| Jenny: | Quarantine. |
| Adam: | Right. |
| Jenny: | Q-u-a-[n-]r-a-n-t-i-n-e. |
| Adam: | It’s pretty long word. And now quarantine can be a noun or a verb. So you can be quarantined, you can quarantine yourself, or you can be put in quarantine. |
| Jenny: | Quarantine就是隔离。然后呢，这个就在Adam说是一个比较正式却是一个medical term。 |
| Adam: | Right. |
| Jenny: | 是吧，医学上用的啊。那另外比较口语的一个说法是， |
| Adam: | Isolate yourself or stay in isolation. |
| Jenny: | 对。其实这个词，因为前两天就是在哦我们所在的温哥华有一个病例，对吧。然后卫生局开新闻发布会的时候就说oh this gentleman he has been in self isolation since he came back from China让他们没有出去所以大家放心啊。所以，可以说self isolation就自我隔离。 |
| Adam: | It, it’s a bit redundant, |
| Jenny: | Ah. |
| Adam: | But, but yes people do say it self isolation, put yourself in self isolation. |
| Jenny: | 那，就像我们先很多朋友在家里不出去这个隔离，我们可以怎么讲呢？ |
| Adam: | You know a lot of these words are really words that you are going to find in the media, again, I think if you were just talking to your friends, you would probably just say “I’m staying at home.” |
| Jenny: | 哦这倒是。因为很多朋友问我说oh how are your parents你家里人怎么样？ 我说 they’re fine but they’re just staying at home as much as possible. |
| Adam: | Right. Because if you use the word quarantine like we said before, it’s a very formal official word and even isolation is, is a, is a pretty deep and and a serious thing. |
| Jenny: | 好。那如果要出门的话呢，非常重要的就是一定要戴口罩。 |
| Adam: | Um, OK. So we probably all know the word “mask”, what we do with masks is we wear masks. |
| Jenny: | 啊，戴口罩to wear masks。这个mask有很多的意思啊。面具、或者女生做的面膜，呢它还有一个意思就是口罩。 |
| Adam: | Right. |
| Jenny: | 然后有不同的口罩。But now, it’s really hard to get masks, right? Because everyone needs masks and we really need to save masks, especially 这那种很professional的masks for our doctors and nurses. |
| Adam: | Right. |
| Jenny: | 一般的人就用一些医用口罩medical masks比较thin的那种。呃其实也是可以的啊。 |
| Jenny: | 好，另外很重要的一点。而且是我跟我孩子每天要说很多很多遍呢就是一定要勤洗手。 |
| Adam: | Wash your hands, kids. |
| Jenny: | 对 wash your hands. Not only kids, everyone. |
| Adam: | Everyone that’s right, that’s right. |
| Jenny: | 而且呢，一个我刚说要倾诉wash your hands frequently另外一个要洗得很仔细。 |
| Adam: | OK so thoroughly. |
| Jenny: | 没错thoroughly。这个副词很好啊。So if you’re thorough, all you do something thoroughly. 就是你彻头彻尾认认真真不满。 |
| Adam: | That’s right from start to finish, very serious, |
| Jenny: | Twenty seconds, use alcohol based soap, warm water to kill germs. |
| Adam: | Yes, mommy. |
| Jenny: | 好，那另外那个消毒。诶，消毒或者消毒水，这个英文里面？ |
| Adam: | Well, we can use the word sterilize*8. |
| Jenny: | 这就消毒的意思to sterilize，是吧。 |
| Adam: | Right, right. Now we also have the word “disinfect”. |
| Jenny: | 哦对，就因为我们刚说infects就是你被感染一种病，那么dis就把它变成反义词。 |
| Adam: | Right. So disinfect, now a noun for disinfect is “disinfectant.” So you can use a disinfectant. |
| Jenny: | Disinfectant. 比如消毒水就是一种disinfectant。 |
| Adam: | Right. |
| Jenny: | 好的。然后呢，当然现在很多的medical professionals专家都跟我们说另外很重要的就是要提高自身免疫力。 |
| Adam: | OK. So you need to strengthen your immune system. |
| Jenny: | 所以免疫力就是immune system是吧。 |
| Adam: | Right. |
| Jenny: | 噢，另外有一个英语词叫immunization. |
| Adam: | Right. |
| Jenny: | To get an immune shot. |
| Adam: | Right. Get a needle. |
| Jenny: | 就打疫苗*9打预防针啊。 |
| Jenny: | 好。那今天节目的最后呢，就还是要说刚Adam说的因为网上真能用很多各种各样难可能一开始难辨真假*10的一些信息。So there is a lot of misinformation going around? |
| Adam: | That’s right. And even if we have strong immune systems, not everybody has a strong immune system in their brain for, for this kind of misinformation. |
| Jenny: | 所以还是很重要的就是trusted sources。 |
| Adam: | Right, right. So we can say “stay informed through trusted sources.” |
| Jenny: | Trusted就是你能够相信的啊。这个新闻的来源。还有很重要的是stay uh calm stay rational。 |
| Adam: | Right it’s it’s not always easy, |
| Jenny: | 对对确实。Calm就是冷静，然后rational就是要理性地对待啊。 |
| Jenny: | 特别是现在我们全国上下了uh it’s a concerted efforts。是众志成城*11一起在努力，所以我们有信心一定会战胜这个新冠状病毒。 |
| Jenny: | 好，那我们今天的节目快要结束了。在跟大家说再见之前呢，我们要致敬所有在一线工作的医护人员。因为这个时候，你们就是和平时代的英雄。Thank you for your heroic efforts putting yourself out there非常非常的不容易。 |
