a b
Jenny: Hello, everyone.
Adam: Hey guys this is Adam.
Jenny: 嗯。那,今天我们的节目呢,well, actually it’s a pretty special show,
Adam: That’s right.
Adam: Right. Right we made it onto the list again.
Jenny: 而且我们同事统计说,已经是连续七年seven years in a row。
Adam: Um-hmm, seven-year itch*1.
Jenny:
a b
Jenny: 七年之痒你不想做了吗 are you getting tired of the show?
Adam: While you’re getting a little itchy*2, it may be itchy you to try new things maybe new shows,
Adam: Rights, right it’s the thing that gets us out of bed every single day,
Jenny: Get rid of the itch,
Adam: Right, yeah just don’t worry about it’ll go away by itself.
Jenny: 是。
Adam: Right. Or it will go away if you focus on other feelings, rights? So for example, seven years, that’s seven years worth of gratitude that seven years worth of joy that seven years worth of pride.
Jenny: Yeah you can say that? But for me the biggest the strongest feeling 就是 very humbling. 就让我humble是很谦虚的意思吗,这个 very humbling 就是 the fact that we have gotten another award. Anyway, that is not the entire show, 我们…
Adam: Yeah that’s a guys, thanks for listening! See you next year.
而是,a lot of people a lot of our users even people on our team, 我们自己的同事都会问我们说,“啊做这么久的节目”,“how do you guys still you know, keep it strong,” “how do you keep it going,” like “don’t you get tired of it,” “what do you get all these ideas,” 对.
Adam: Rights.
Jenny: 所以我想今天只是跟大家分享一下这些吧,so what is our you know secret sauce.
Adam: What’s the secret sauce? Yeah.
Jenny: 秘制酱料是什么 what is our magic.
Adam: What’s the magic? Right.
Jenny: So. Adam, tell me, tell us, what is the...
Adam: The secret sauce?
Jenny: How do we do it?
Adam: Yeah, butter, butter and cream and salt and more butter.
Adam: Well, I think really the key is in our simplicity.
Jenny:
Adam: And I don’t mean the simplicity of what we say, or the simplicity of who we are, ah I just think that we have a very straightforward production process where is other, other shows, might, maybe they have a great show, but they need to put a lot of effort into it either beforehand or after.
I really agree that simplicity is one of the secret ingredients.
Adam: Right.
Jenny: To our show. 但是我会在加一点呢就是说,the simplicity of our format. 我们这个节目的形式,you know just two people having a conversation that they would like to have even if they were not recording,
Adam: Right.
在聊天,时是一个非常很exciting的topic就两个人都很想聊这件事情 and they want to know what the other person things, they want to tease the idea out and they want to share it with more people.
Adam: Rights. Yeah so I’ve always felt that we could do the show live, I have a feeling that if if there was like a red light up here that said “LIVE,” live, we probably would just be on our toes*3 a little bit more,
Jenny: 但我还是go back to就是,因为 we’ve been working together for a wow, seven years, now,
Adam: SEVEN YEARS!
I guess you can call it what can?
Adam: I think that was the honesty of the first thing we ever recorded one of the first things we ever recorded was about that.
Jenny: 默契 when we did have any 默契我们,做了一个节目说「默契英语怎么说?」
Adam: Yeah exactly so chemistry*4 is the word that I said then, and it is the word that I will continue to say today. Two people have good or great or amazing chemistry.
You know there are instances where you just really hit it off*5, like the other person from the get-go*6 XX开始. 但, I wouldn’t say that’s us from the get-go 以开始的时候,
Adam: Yeah maybe not, maybe not. Um I remember the first time we ever recorded together, it was great. But I was like my demo. I thought it was really good and then the second time we recorded together, I had prepared for one topic which is what we originally had discussed, and when we actually recorded it was a completely different topics. So I was...
Jenny:
Adam: Yeah yeah strange, right?
Adam: Oh I’m sorry, so sorry why would I do that...
Adam: I mean also the original topic was jazz music. Something that I’m quite comfortable talking about. And it got changed to Beijing’s ring roads.
Jenny: 没有没有,which goes to show you,我觉得我个人在这七年做这个节目一起。
因为,我觉得你开始做一个节目或者开始做一个产品,doesn’t mean you know everything that you have all the answers.
Adam: Right.
Adam: Yes.
Jenny: Like now, I would never do that to anyone. 现在也可以改 but you have to do it in advance not on the day at recording.
Adam: Yeah, that’s alright, that’s alright.
Jenny: I really apologize for that.
Adam: Don’t worry, don’t worry. But I’ll never forget when you just said my name at one point*9 “Adam,” and it was like, it was like my parents almost say you know like “Adam,”
Jenny: Oh, I’m so sorry...
Adam: No, I’m here. All right all right I’m here. So it was it was bad.
Adam: You know so I guess that’s some that’s the lesson for me, and just going back to how we use that in our show now, is I’m just ready for anything. You know, you could say whatever you want to throw it at me and I’ll be ready.
Jenny: And I think for me, the the change on the growth is to not do that: 不要突然surprise你的partner。
Jenny: And that’s why 哦我觉现在讲讲what is our actual process. 没有很多特别fancy的,后期制作啊,或者structurally you know it’s not that fancy.
Adam: Right.
Jenny: But I really do think you know the format and how you get the fundamentals down to prep and records the show 是很重要的.
Adam: Right.
Adam: Rights, right right. Um the short answer is: Jenny comes up with them.
I filter them xx.
Adam: Filter them OK.
Jenny: From most of it, from our users.
Adam: Yeah there’s a lot of user comments, requests, sometimes I’ll see something and I really really want to talk about it,
I deferred*10 to you a lot more, 因为Adam是非常religiously其实很勤劳的check用户的留言、反馈,然后会经常共说:“oh maybe you know someone said that the other day,” and they, yeah I think it’ll be a good topic.
Adam: Right. I’m vested in these fake phone numbers in China, and it’s really, it’s really paid off.
But you would be interested in.
Adam: Right, right right.
Jenny: So there is a very delicate balance.
Adam: Yeah OK, you read my mind. So I was just going to say like when we’re talking about “oh, how do I lose weight,” or “how do I put my finances straight,” it’s always balance the answer is balance. Nobody wants to hear that answer. But like the secret sauce is always just balance. So me, I’m a teacher I like talking about grammar and idioms, and stuff like that, but I know that that’s not what people want to hear all the time. We just have to balance.
所以我们的话题 it’s a mix of you know highly practical, useful, interesting, illuminating topics but also 只有很多evergreen常青,永远有用的。然后呢,也有很多timely 实效性比较强的 because that’s what’s happening what’s people are talking about. And I would want to know how to say this in English.
Adam: Right. All the other way around, right? I mean how many English speakers listen to the show to learn Chinese.
Jenny: Really? How many.
Adam: Well I have at least a few,
Jenny: Two?
Adam: That’s more than zero right it’s still pretty impressive.
Jenny: 哎其实我觉得这个可能就是 it all boils down*11, it all comes down to 永远要从我们听众用户的眼睛去,看我们的工作。You know and and that’s something I just drill it I try to drill it uh my coworkers minds.
Adam: Right.
Now I don’t know how you feel about this there 有很多人问我们说,哎你们讲都想让你们自己都very enthusiastic about、passionate about是吧。
Adam: Yeah, you don’t want to be “hey guys this is the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard, wow.”
Jenny:
Adam: I don’t know. “Fake enthusiasm?”
Jenny: Self high? I think ”self indulgent.” 特别现在podcasts很多嘛,and a lot of those podcasts确实就是more like pet projects*13,是吧,personal hobby的,它做这个很就是更多像自己的一个心情了记录。 所以 you know I I just always want to keep that as my guiding star*14.
Adam: Yeah. I think probably the difference between me now and me seven years ago was that I really wanted to be on this show, seven years ago. I don’t mean that I don’t want to be on it now, but the reason I wanted to be on it was just to be on it.
Adam: You know what I mean? Like I really yeah this would be great, so many people are going to listen this will be great. So it really was sort of indulging*15 myself where is now I just feel really honored to be able to say something and then all of these people sort of write it down.
Adam: Exactly.
After doing so many shows, so many years, is there anything that still surprises you? Or you know what keeps you going what keeps you want to come here and record with me.
Adam: You know Jenny, I like to consider myself to be a person who is not often surprised,
Jenny:
Adam: That said, what surprises me is yeah the people keep coming back.
Jenny:
Adam: You know like we were always humbled, surprise, filled with gratitude, just to to know that people are there people are listening.
Jenny: Yeah especially reading on user comments.
Adam: Um-hum.
Adam: Right.
Adam: And you know what I mean? Like those kids are getting ready to go study overseas right are going to travel somewhere. And they’re starting that adventure and we’re so lucky to be able to go with them in a sense*17.
呃,如果在你们忙碌的一天里面,even for you know fifteen minutes we’ve helped you distressful a little, make the day a little bit better and learn something, you know, 这个对我来说就是至永远会sustain我只是, 让我继续走下去每天很有动力的事情。
Adam: Agreed.
Jenny:
Adam: Mm-hm.
Jenny: 好。it’s been seven years, we’re still here, and we will still be here as long as you still need us. Thank you for your support guys, 谢谢大家的收听, we’ll see you next time.
Adam: All right bye guys, happy new year.
