Hi everybody, 大家好, 欢迎收看今天的成长汉语. Thanks for joining us for today’s episode of Growing up with Chinese.
Now we designed our show to help all of you learn some basic Chinese, through the adventures of 小明, a local 北京 high school student, and Mike, an exchange student who is living with 小明. And apart from language study, we also aim to introduce to all of you various aspects of culture, history and everyday life.
So let’s jump ride in and take a look at today’s clip.
小明：妈妈，快看，这张照片照得多漂亮啊！
小明妈：你说的是哪张？
小明：就是上海外滩的这张，我照的。哎，妈妈，我发现您的儿子真是摄影天才啊。
小明妈：哈哈，我看啊，我的儿子可不止是摄影天才，还是……
小明：是什么？ 是什么？
小明妈：吹牛大王！
小明：真是的，妈妈，您怎么说也得鼓励鼓励我吧！ 对了，这儿还有一张苏州留园的，您看看，怎么样？
小明妈：这张不错。哎，小明，麦克呢？ 怎么这么半天都没看到他啊？
小明：他在卧室呢吧。
小明妈：儿子，别光顾着自己玩儿。你去把麦克叫下来吧。
小明：麦克！ 麦克！
Mike：哎，来啦！
小明：麦克！
Mike：哎呀，吓我一跳！ 你干什么呀。
小明：你研究什么呢，聚精会神地？ 我在这儿站了好半天了，你居然都没看见！
Mike：我正在研究北京地图。
小明：北京地图有什么好研究的？ 走走，还是跟我一起看看咱们在上海拍的照片吧！
Mike：哎呀，小明、阿姨，我妈妈不是快要来北京了嘛，我正在研究带她去哪儿玩比较好呢。
小明：嗨，那你看什么地图啊。北京好玩儿的地方可多了去了，像故宫、天安门、长城、颐和园、十三陵……对了，你可以问我妈妈呀！
小明妈：是啊，麦克，你忘啦，阿姨就是导游啊。除了刚才小明说过的历史古迹，你还可以带她看看北京现代的建筑，比如鸟巢、水立方、奥林匹克公园什么的，都很不错。
Mike：嗯，好的。对了，阿姨，我妈妈对中国文化和艺术品都挺感兴趣的。
小明妈：那你不妨带她去琉璃厂、潘家园古玩市场这些地方转转。在那里既可以买到中国的字画，又可以买到传统的瓷器、手工艺品什么的。
小明：麦克，说不定你们还真能淘到几件价值连城的古董呢！
小明妈：不过，这些地方真古董多，假古董也不少。你们可得小心点儿！
Mike：好的，您放心吧。小明，你能帮我把阿姨说过的景点在地图上标出来吗？
小明妈：哎呀，不用这么麻烦。麦克，你放心。只要有空儿，我一定就陪你和你妈妈一起逛北京。
小明：就是啊。再说了，还有我呢！
Mike：真的吗，那太好了。谢谢，谢谢。
There’s some planning under way today Mike is finally going to be able to show off some of his 北京 knowledge once his mom arrives but it also seems like he doesn’t quite nowhere to begin. So thank goodness he has 小明 and 小明’s mom there to help him. Let’s take a moment to look at some of our dialogue specifics.
吹牛大王. Now this is come up before but it was quite a while ago. If you 吹牛 or blow at a cow, it means that’s you are bragging, boasting or talking big. and if you are a 大王 or big king, then you are the king of bragging. 吹牛大王. Now, just so you all know, the 牛 can be left out, like if someone was bragging about something, I could say 你吹吧. You just keep on bragging. Now in any case it looks like 小明 might think his photos are a bit better than they actually are.
小明：妈妈，快看，这张照片照得多漂亮啊！
小明妈：你说的是哪张？
小明：就是上海外滩的这张，我照的。哎，妈妈，我发现您的儿子真是摄影天才啊。
小明妈：哈哈，我看啊，我的儿子可不止是摄影天才，还是……
小明：是什么？ 是什么？
小明妈：吹牛大王！
小明：真是的，妈妈，您怎么说也得鼓励鼓励我吧！ 对了，这儿还有一张苏州留园的，您看看，怎么样？
小明妈：这张不错。哎，小明，麦克呢？ 怎么这么半天都没看到他啊？
小明：他在卧室呢吧。
小明妈：儿子，别光顾着自己玩儿。你去把麦克叫下来吧。
Now here is some good words to know when you are in China. Because if you ever go out to buy some traditional Chinese things, you will probably, for sure, encounter them. 中国字画. Chinese calligraphy and painting. Now 字 we all know means characters or words, calligraphy. And 画 means painting. So put them all together 中国字画 and you get Chinese calligraphy and painting.
传统的瓷器. Traditional pottery or earthenware. 传统 means traditional. And 瓷器 is how you say pottery. Chinese pottery is really stunning and has a history of thousands of years. Now different dynasties were known for different kinds of pottery. But perhaps, some of you’ve heard of 景德镇 pottery. It’s gorgeous.
小明：麦克！
Mike：哎呀，吓我一跳！ 你干什么呀。

All right let’s take a look at our vocabulary words of the day.
- 外滩 the Bund in 上海. wài tān
- 摄影 photography. shè yǐng
- 天才 genius, talent, gift. tiān cái
- 聚精会神 concentrate one’s attention, be all eyes and ears. jù jīng huì shén
- 研究 research. yán jiū
- 历史古迹 historic site, place of historic interest. lì shǐ gǔ jì
OK it’s language point time everyone, we’ve got some fun things to cover today so let’s start with 怎么说也得.
怎么说也得 is like saying 至少也需要 or 至少也应该. At the very least you need or at the very least you should. The 得 in 怎么说也得 means 需要 to need or 应该 should. So today 小明 said 您怎么说也得鼓励鼓励我吧. At the very least you should be giving me some encouragement. Now you could also say 这件衣服怎么说也得两百块钱. This piece of clothing is at least two hundred 人民币. OK, let’s check out some more examples.
- 我做的饭怎么样？ 我忙了半天，你们怎么说也得鼓励一下我吧。
- 我饿了，咱们去吃麦当劳吧？／都到苏州了，怎么说也得尝尝苏州小吃吧？
多了去了. Now in spoken Chinese, 多了去了 means a lot of something or 非常多. Now if you say 多了去了, you can’t have anything following it. 多了去了 can stand on its own. Or whatever it is that you’re saying there’s a lot of can come before it. Now because it carries an exaggerated meaning of the being a lot of something, you don’t need to add 很 or 非常 when you use it because you don’t need to it’s already a lot. So, today we saw 小明 use this expression when he said 北京好玩儿的地方可多了去了. There are tons of fun places in 北京. Now 小明 used a 可 before 多了去了, 可多了去了.
- 上海有什么小吃？／那个多了去了。比如，生煎包、阳春面什么的。
- 小明，你有后海的照片吗？／有啊，多了去了。
And finally let’s take a look at 不妨. 不妨 is an adverb and expresses that you can or are able to do something. So it’s frequently used when someone’s making a suggestion. Kind of like “why don’t you,” or “there is no harm in,” or “might as well” in English. So 小明’s mom said 那你不妨带她去琉璃厂, 潘家园古玩市场这些地方转转. You might as well take her to 琉璃厂 or 潘家园 antique market. Now anther example of 不妨 could be 这件事你不妨明天再跟她说. You might as well talk about this matter with her tomorrow.
- 我们不妨先逛外滩，再去浦东。／好啊，听你的。
- MIKE，咱们不妨坐汽车去，比坐火车方便。／好的，汽车票好买吗？
