Hi everybody 大家好, 欢迎收看今天的成长汉语. Thanks for joining us for today’s episode of Growing up with Chinese.

Now 小明 and Mike continue to explore 上海, and yes today’s skit is a continuation of last episode. So new let’s check in with our explorers as they delve*1 deeper into 上海 and its treasures.

堂妹:哎,小明,麦克呢?
小明:是啊,刚在还在我旁边呢。
Mike:

Mike:小明小明,那个小机器人在射箭。
小明:哇,不会吧,这么牛。你看他拉弓上箭的姿势,还挺像那么回事儿的。
堂妹:那可不! 人家是用电脑程序控制的,每一招每一式都是标准化动作,当然专业啦。你们看,那边还有小机器人在画画呢。

堂妹:都逛了大半天了,你们俩累吗? 我可是累死了。我带你们去看4D电影,边看边休息,好不好?
小明:当然好了,而且是迫不及待。
Mike:我也是,走吧!

小明:我们回来喽!
叔叔:累坏了吧,你们仨快洗手吃饭吧!
奶奶:麦克,你觉得上海好不好啊?
Mike:我觉得上海太好了,不但建筑漂亮,而且小吃也很好吃。
奶奶:哈哈,这个小导游呢? 她称职吗?
小明:她呀,凑凑合合,还可以吧。
堂妹:什么叫凑凑合合啊? 我这么尽心尽力,你还嫌我不称职啊?
Mike:

Now 小明 had a fabulous expression today with 牛. Now Mike saw the robot with a bow and arrow and 小明’s response was 不会吧, 这么牛. Now, the character here for 牛 is indeed the character for cow. But when it’s used this way it means cool, awesome, hardcore or any word that you can think of your own language that expresses amazement and impressiveness. Using 牛 in this way has become very popular in recent years in China and is very much a colloquialism. 你们的中文现在说得特别牛.

Mike:小明小明,那个小机器人在射箭。
小明:哇,不会吧,这么牛。你看他拉弓上箭的姿势,还挺像那么回事儿的。
堂妹:那可不! 人家是用电脑程序控制的,每一招每一式都是标准化动作,当然专业啦。你们看,那边还有小机器人在画画呢。

OK, so 小明 followed this 牛 remark with 你看他拉弓上箭的姿势. Look at the way he’s pulling the bow back and notching*2 the arrow. 还挺像那么回事儿的. He really looks like he knows what he is doing. Now 弓 means bow so 拉弓 is to draw your bow. 箭 is how you say arrow. So 上箭 is to notch your arrow. 拉弓上箭.

Mike:小明小明,那个小机器人在射箭。
小明:哇,不会吧,这么牛。你看他拉弓上箭的姿势还挺像那么回事儿的
堂妹:那可不! 人家是用电脑程序控制的,每一招每一式都是标准化动作,当然专业啦。你们看,那边还有小机器人在画画呢。

Mike:我也是,走吧!

茜茜’s grandmother seems quite concerned how 茜茜 performed as a tour guide. So she asked Mike and 小明 “她称职吗?” 称职 means to fill a post with credit or to be competent. So “was she competent?”

小明 said 凑凑合合. 凑合 or 凑凑合合 means possible or not too bad. The teasing never stops, does it.

奶奶:你觉得上海好不好啊?
Mike:我觉得上海太好了,不但建筑漂亮,而且小吃也很好吃。
奶奶:哈哈,这个小导游呢? 她称职吗
小明:她呀,凑凑合合,还可以吧。
堂妹:什么叫凑凑合合啊? 我这么尽心尽力,你还嫌我不称职啊?

OK let’s take a few minutes to go over today’s vocabulary.

  • 怒发冲冠 bristle*3 with anger, swell with rage, be in a towering*4 passion of rage. nù fà chōng guān
  • 电脑程序 computer program. diàn nǎo chéng xù
  • 控制 control. kòng zhì

All right it’s time to take a look at today’s language points and to begin with let’s take a look at 假如.

假如 is used at the beginning of a sentence and is similar to 如果 or if. But it’s a little bit more formal. Kind of like the difference between if and supposing. So 茜茜 said 假如头发更长, 直立的效果会更明显. Supposing your hair was longer, the effect of it standing on end would be more noticeable. That’s pretty straightforward right? Let’s look at some more examples.

  • 假如我养宠物,我会养一只哈士奇。/假如是我,我肯定养一只折耳猫
  • 假如你去上海,帮我买一套世博会的纪念邮票吧。/好的,没问题。

嫌. 嫌 is the verb that expresses dissatisfaction. In other words, if you hear it used, you know the what is being said has a negative connotation*5. Now it can be followed by a verb or phrase. So we saw it used today after 小明 teased 茜茜 about being just a possible tour guide. She said, 我这么尽心尽力, 你还嫌我不称职呢? I tried so hard and was so honest, and you felt like I wasn’t competent?

  • 小明,小点儿声,太吵了!/声音这么小,她还吵。
  • 你不是说要去外滩逛逛吗?/我那儿人太多,不去了。

We’ve got a verb to look at next 多亏. Now 多亏 means thanks to, or luckily. It can be followed by a noun, a verb or a phrase. And there is no negative form of 多亏; it’s always positive. Ever the peacemaker Mike said 茜茜是个非常棒的导游, 这几天多亏她了. 西西*6 is a fabulous tour guide. These past few days have all been thanks to her. Now in spoken Chinese you oftentimes hear a 了 added after 多亏. 多亏了. So an example of this could be 这次多亏了遇到你, 要不我就迟到了. Luckily I run into you this time otherwise I would have been late. OK, let’s look at some more examples of how to use 多亏.

  • 兰兰,这学期多亏你的帮助,我才考得这么好。/呵呵,别客气。
  • 多亏出租车司机提醒我,要不我差点儿把相机落在车上。/是么,好险啊。

好了, 我们今天剩的时间不多了. We’ve just about run out of time for today but, before we go, I just want to address an email that we’ve got from Jeff in the United States. He asks:

“Can you tell me how to look up the meaning of characters in the dictionary?”

OK, good question, Jeff. If you know the pinyin and tone of the character you’re looking for, it’s the same as looking up an English word. You find it by searching alphabetically. And then, you look for the character according to its tone.

Now, if you don’t know the character, you look it up by its radical. Now this is one reason why knowing your radicals in Chinese is so important. You need to count how many strokes are in your character’s radical. And then you find it in a radical chart.

Now once you’ve done that, you go to the page where that radical is listed. And count how many strokes are in the rest of the character. You can then find your character by looking for it under the number of strokes it has. It’s pretty straightforward. I hope that helps.

OK, I hope you all enjoyed seeing some more of 上海 and don’t forget to visit our website if you want to review or watch today’s episode again. And while you are at it, leave us some comments or send in any questions you might have. It’s always great to hear from you. OK, I’ll see you all next time, 大家, 加油,下次见, bye for now.
