Hi everybody, 大家好, 欢迎收看今天的成长汉语. Thanks for joining us for today’s episode of Growing up with Chinese.

Now 小明 and Mike are still out and about in 上海 today taking in the sights and sounds of that fabulous city. We’ll be continuing our skit from last time so let’s check in with our gang and see what they have lined up for today.

堂妹:小明、麦克,你们看,从这儿可以俯瞰整个浦东和浦西。
Mike:哇,真的,真的。这就叫“尽……尽收眼底”。
小明:嗯,确实是。没有比从这儿看上海更漂亮的了。
堂妹:哎呀,快过来。从这里还可以看到世博园呢。
小明:是啊,麦克,你快看,那个像帽子一样的红色建筑就是中国馆。
Mike:啊,真漂亮。快,帮我找找美国馆。
小明:就在那里,你看到了吗?
Mike:看到了,看到了,太棒了。
堂妹:小明、麦克我们仨照张合影吧?
小明、Mike:好啊。
小明:您给照一张相片,谢谢。

堂妹:麦克,那边有个商店。你想不想给你的父母买点儿纪念品呢?
Mike:电视塔里还有卖纪念品的吗? 太好了,快带我去吧。

Mike:我要买几张明信片,寄给我的爸爸妈妈。
茜茜:好啊。
Mike:哇,我太喜欢这个模型了。我要两个。
堂妹:你买这么多干什么?
Mike:一个是我自己的,另外一个嘛,我……我送给一个北京的朋友。
堂妹:噢。哎,小明呢? 你看,他都顾不上理咱们了。
Mike:小明小明
小明:我要买这个。
堂妹:小明,你也要买这个模型吗? 我记得你上次来上海已经买过了一个了。
小明:这……这,我是送人的。你就别问了。
堂妹:不会也是送给北京的一个朋友吧?
小明:你是怎么知道的? 我要送给我的同学,兰兰。
Mike:你……你也送……?
堂妹:麦克,你不会也是给兰兰买的吧?
Mike:本来……本来是。
堂妹:你们,你们……兰兰是谁呀?

Well it looks like today Mike and 小明 both had the same idea to get 兰兰 a model as a gift. Well, I’m sure she’ll be happy even if she has two. OK let’s take a look at some specifics in our clip.

Now Chinese really is full of expressions or idioms that might only be four characters long but they have decently long explanations. But actually I think it’s a part of what makes Chinese such an incredible language and fun one to learn.

And in any case we heard Mike used one today. 尽收眼底. Now this means have a panoramic view. So let’s break it down so we can make sense out of the character grouping. 尽 in this context, means to the utmost*1 or to the limit, to the full. 收 means to take in, 眼 you should all know, it means eyes and 底 means bottom or base. 尽收眼底. Have a panoramic view.

堂妹:小明、麦克,你们看,从这儿可以俯瞰整个浦东和浦西。
Mike:哇,真的,真的。这就叫“尽……尽收眼底”。
小明:嗯,确实是。没有比从这儿看上海更漂亮的了。

小明、Mike:好啊。
小明:您给照一张相片,谢谢。

Now it’s always nice to buy souvenirs of a place you visit. And we saws Mike and 小明 both have the same idea today; they each bought 兰兰 a 纪念品. 纪念 on its own means commemorate or mark. 品 refers to an article or a product. So 纪念品 is how you say souvenir or memento in Chinese. And so, what kind of 纪念品 did they both buy? 他们买了模型. They bought models.

堂妹:麦克,那边有个商店。你想不想给你的父母买点儿纪念品呢?
Mike:电视塔里还有卖纪念品的吗? 太好了,快带我去吧。

Mike:我要买几张明信片,寄给我的爸爸妈妈。
茜茜:好啊。

Mike:小明小明
小明:我要买这个。
堂妹:小明,你也要买这个模型吗? 我记得你上次来上海已经买过了一个了。

OK that didn’t take too long, our dialogue today was pretty straightforward but let’s take one more look at it. Shall we?

堂妹:小明、麦克,你们看,从这儿可以俯瞰整个浦东和浦西。

OK now let’s take a few minutes to go over today’s vocabulary.

  • 建筑物 building, structure. jiàn zhù wù
  • 俯瞰 look down at, overlook. fǔ kàn
  • 纪念品 souvenir, keepsake, memento. jì niàn pín
  • 明信片 postcard. míng xìn piàn
  • 模型 model. mó xíng

OK it’s time to take a look at today’s language points and to begin with let’s discuss 整.

整 in today’s context functions as an adjective and it means entire or complete. So you usually see it followed by a noun or a measure word. So if you were followed by a noun, you could have 整天 all day or 整年 all year. 他整天都在家带着. He spends all day at home. Now we see 整 followed by a measure word in today’s dialogue. 茜茜*2 says 你们看, 从这儿可以俯瞰整个浦东和浦西. Look you guys, from here you can look down on all of 浦东 and 浦西. So 个 is our measure word in this context. You could say 整条街都是饭馆. The entire street is all restaurants. Now in this case, 条 is our measure word, so let’s look at some more examples.

  • MIKE最近在忙什么? 我怎么天都见不到他?/我也不知道。
  • 从电视塔可以看到个北京。/是吗? 你也带我去看看吧。

All right next we have a pattern: 没有比 something 更 something. Now this is a comparison pattern. And it’s used to express the highest degree of something. Kind of like the expression “there isn’t anything or anyone more than,” in English. So 没有比 can be followed by someone or something and 更 is followed by an adjective or a verb phrase. And typically this phrase will end with 的. So, let’s look at how this pattern was used in today’s dialogue. Now 小明 said 没有比从这儿看上海更漂亮的了. There isn’t anywhere in 上海 where you can get a more beautiful view.

  • 你喜欢吃烤鸭吗?/当然了,没有比烤鸭好吃的了。
  • 哇,没有比金城武帅的明星了。/有啊,我呀!

Our final language point is quite straightforward 顾不上. Now 顾不上 means you can’t attend to something or you can’t take something into consideration. So 茜茜 said of 小明 today 你看, 他都顾不上理咱们了. You see that? He can’t be bothered to pay attention to us.

  • Mike,好吃吗?/你看,他都顾不上理你了。

好了, 我们今天剩的时间不多了. We’ve just about run out of time for today but before we go there is an issue I want to address, as many of you have sent in comments about it. Now indeed, yes, the ball that Mike and 小明 are using to play American football is actually a rugby ball! Good catch everybody.

Now the only thing I can say is that both rugby and American football are relatively new sports in China that is you don’t really see them played much although in recent years they’ve gained some popularity.

Now I personally have never gone out looking for either rugby ball or an American football in China, but having talked to the crew that filmed our dramatic skits, they told me that they were unable to find an American football in time for filming. So a rugby ball was used as a substitute.

Now I would like to apologize if we’ve offended anyone and hopefully both sports will become more and more popular with people here in China. Exercise is always good thing.

OK, on that note, I hope you all enjoyed seeing more of 上海, and please don’t forget to visit our website if you want to review anything or watch today’s episode again. And while you’re there, leave us some comments or send in any questions you might have, it’s always great to hear from you. OK, I will see you all next time. 大家, 加油, 下次见, bye for now.
